The easiest way to decluttering your closet is by grouping your clothing items by category. Start with dresses, pants, then coats, types of denim, shoes, and so on... Do a quick purge of anything you keep, donate, or clothing that needs altering or dry cleaning.
Decide what to fold, hang, fix and donate.
A simple solution to helping tackle indecisiveness when decluttering is to ask yourself the following about every item in your closet:
- Do I still wear them
- Do they still fit?
- Does it itch or scratch?
- Do I like them?
That will help you decide what pile they should go in. Be brutal guys,...
Clothing items that will go in drawers or on shelves fold them. Don't fold your bulky items. Put them in the hanging pile. Use organizers to separate smaller items. When you fold your clothes, leave a couple of dryer sheets tucked in between to keep them smelling fresh.
Put any dirty laundry into your laundry hamper. Anything that needs to be repaired should go to the tailor or dry cleaner. No longer worn items should go in a donation pile.
Keep pieces that work well together as opposed to not wearing them again. That should go to the donation pile.
Tip: Keep all your clothes together– try not to store off-season clothing in another area. Pack them in the back of your closet. You never know when you will need them.
Now on to shoes. As you hold them up, ask yourself:
- Does it pinch my toes?
- Are the heels too high to walk in?
- Do they still fit?
- When last have I worn them?
- Do I love them?
Why have 50 pairs of shoes in your closet when you only wear 10?
Now on to the handbags. Wow, I know you must be thinking this is getting too much, I know, but you have to do it, again ask yourself:
- Which pieces do you love the most?
- Is it in great condition?
- Are they still in style ?
- When last have I used it?
While it may be difficult, wouldn't you rather have these handbags in the closet of someone who loves them and uses them often?
And finally Jewellery
Is it broken?
Can it be fixed?
Do I love it?
Have I even worn this?
Only keep the pieces that you wear and the sentimental ones. Store them in a box if you only have a few. You can use the closet door by installing hooks and hanging your most worn scarves and jewelry at eye level.
Put everything back in the closet hanging and sorting by color with the most-worn items in front. Take alterations and cleaning to the tailor and dry cleaner. And lastly, take donations to your charity of choice or a resale shop. Remember, resist the urge to shove them back.. just think of your newly decluttered closet.
Remember, the more often you declutter, the less time it will take and the easier it will get. All of this will take much less time than you think if you tackle it regularly. Hope this advice helps you on your way to decluttering your closet.
